Chrisp Street Market is in the heart of the East End on the Lansbury Estate, featured in the 1951 Festival of Britain. It was the first pedestrianised shopping centre in the country and is now one of London’s most bustling and historic markets. Trading between 10am and 4pm everyday except Sunday, it sells a variety of quality merchandise from fresh produce to home-wares, major chains to specialist stores: everything you need from essentials to treats. With the recent opening of the landmark Idea Store (designed by David Adjaye Associates), and significant environmental improvements, the market is worth a visit for its architectural value alone. Redevelopment after the Second World War provided the original Victorian street market with a central square. Whatever the weather, the cafes in the square dish up feasts of Chinese and Indian food alongside traditional East End fare. The square also offers ringside views of the entertainment: it’s the perfect place for people to gather, soak up the vibrant atmosphere of the market and enjoy the diverse range of performance on offer.
Throughout the Summer Chrisp Street Market has hosted a series of Summer family entertainment events. Today’s finale includes:
Avanti Display’s The Spurting Man
Closing the season of Chrisp Street Market Summer Events is a site-specific, wacky water-based show from the acclaimed Avanti Display
Les Grooms
French musical comedians Les Grooms unleash their wild jazz-playing hotel bellhops
The Dream Engine’s Cone
Aerial acrobatics from two daredevil dancers
Plus face painting, henna, makeovers, nail art, walkabout fun from Larkin' About’s Deep Sea Divers, and plenty of great bargains to be had. Local painter, Terri Rae, will be exhibiting her canvas creations and visitors can have a go at the open craft workshops to explore their own creative side.
